Sir John Harington

THE GREAT OUTDOORS?

There was a time when everyone did it outside. However, after more than a million years we finally managed to evolve our toiletry habits. Ancient civilisations, like the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used primitive forms of sanitation. Though, frankly that wasn’t much more than a hole in the ground. They did however, to their great credit, introduce seats and benches for more comfortable use.

During the Renaissance, innovations like the printing press facilitated the spread of knowledge, fuelling advancements in literature, art, science and toilet design. This marked a transition from open defecation to more private indoor facilities. Of course, only for those who could afford it.

By the 19th century, advancements in urban planning and sanitation, led to outdoor toilets for the common people. It was at this moment that Sir John Harington’s wonderous invention became widespread. Indoor plumbing and the flush toilet became the norm.

Outhouses continue to be popular where access to plumbing is limited. But now, also with communities focusing on sustainability and off-grid living, adopting composting toilets as a more environmentally friendly solution. These days, the beautiful as well as practical possibilities of outdoor toilets are endless. As you see.
